Mr. Awesome was a Yak-11 with the 700hp engine replaced with an R-3350 turbocompound radial of over 3,700 hp, a cut down prop from a AD-1 Skyraider, and a tail from a T-33 jet on a seven-foot extended fuselage. When on power it required both feet on the right rudder to counteract the massive torqe in such a small plane.
One night while parked on the ramp, some dudes drove by and took pot shots at it through a fence. The owners patched up the aluminum skin but had no idea a bullet fragment had passed into the oil system. During takeoff at Reno it didslodged and then later got stuck, cutting off some fluids followed by engine failure and hydraulic problems. It cartwheeled trying to land on one gear leg.
Future next gen S2000 owner

Pretty good chance the drivers-by weren’t Americans, either legally or in spirit.
